- Q
- Why hire a designer instead of an architect or design-build contractor?
Hiring an architect or design-build contractor might very well be a feasible option depending on the nature of your project. But we like to tell people, think of it as having the right tool for the job. If you’re building a new apartment complex, call an architect. However, there’s no reason to pay $10K for designs and plans when all you need is a small room in the back of the house. A reputable design-build contractor would likely give you a nice project. After all they are an all-in-one service. On the downside, they are an “all-in-one” service, and as such, sometimes “all” implies that everyone gets involved, including with the design. The reason this can be a downside is because the home that you and your designer may have envisioned at the start could very well get lost with everyone else chiming in on your design. Working one-on-one with a designer ensures that this won’t happen.
